William C. Lewis Dual Language students became Water Wise this Fall. Third graders participated in the Water Wise program at the YMCA of Delaware and took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to swim. For some students, this was their first experience in a large pool. For others, it was an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of water safety and swimming skills.
Once a week students grabbed their swim gear, hopped on the bus and traveled to the Walnut Street YMCA. Once there, they learned how to be safe in and around water. Students worked in small groups with an instructor and practiced things like blowing bubbles in the water, getting their faces wet, treading to keep their head above water and basic swim strokes. Some even worked on endurance and practiced swimming the length of the pool. In celebration of completing the course, students and teachers had a blast manuvering around the pool in bubble balls.
Lewis students had a fabulous time learning to swim and be safe in the water, while successfully decreasing their risk drowning. Parents and teachers were extremely grateful that Lewis students were the recipients of this wonderful life-saving opportunity.
