Letters from Dr. Jakubowski

North Star Elementary

Vision: North Star will be recognized as a school that inspires a love of learning.

October, 2020

Welcome to North Star Elementary School!

I am Principal Jakubowski and this is my 10th year at North Star and I’m excited to share with you a little bit about our school.

We are the North Star Bears and our motto is “Kind Learners Are Responsible and Respectful”.

We are a supportive community and constantly look for ways to encourage students to reach for the stars!

We offer a Talented and Gifted class weekly for students in grades 2-5.

We have a beautiful Outdoor Classroom where teachers take their class to have lessons and activities.

We have close to 630 students, with 5 homerooms in grades K-3, and 4 homerooms in 4th and 5th grade.

Students in grades 4 & 5 can choose to play an instrument and receive weekly lessons in school and put on a winter and spring band concert.
Students in 5th grade participate in chorus during the school day and also put on a winter and spring concert.

When you walk into our school, you will feel the positive, welcoming, warm and inviting culture that exists because of our exceptional teachers, staff, paras, specialists, custodians, cafeteria staff and office staff.

August 18, 2020

Dear North Star Families,

Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year! First and foremost, I hope that this communication finds you and your loved ones healthy and well during these unprecedented times. We are looking forward to an awesome year! We are not returning to normal, we are coming back better! We can’t wait to see our returning students and families, and we want to welcome all of our new families to North Star. We are a supportive community and our goal is to foster the love of learning in every child to become lifelong learners.

With the start of this upcoming school year looking so different, we wanted to provide you some information that may be beneficial to you as you make family decisions.  While we are still working on transforming our program from in person learning to a remote model for the first six weeks of school, I do want to publicly commit to you that we are determined to provide your child with the best education possible under these very unusual circumstances.

As our district recently announced, the first day of school is September 8. We will phase in our instructional model and all Red Clay students will start the 2020-21 school year in a remote learning environment for the first six weeks. You can learn more about Red Clay’s Roadmap to Reopening at redclayschools.com/reopening.

Complete the Safe Return to School Questionnaire by August 24

Our district plans to phase in a hybrid learning environment for specific grade levels/programs later this school year, with families that choose in-person learning. In this scenario, families that wish to keep students home would be provided with remote learning support.

To help us plan for the phased reopening, please complete the Safe Return to School Questionnaire by August 24. We need to hear from every family so that we can plan a safe and efficient return to in-person learning when it is time to reopen our doors.

Check your mailbox for your child’s Red Clay Back-to-School Starter Kit

Please check your mail for the Red Clay Back-to-School Starter Kit, which should arrive in your mailbox around August 29. This kit provides important details to help your family start the school year, including your child’s Google account, parent/guardian login information for Home Access Center (HAC) and Schoology, and the contact information that we have on file for your family in School Messenger.

Pick up your child’s Chromebook and learning materials on September 2 (Grades 3-5), September 3 (Grades K-2)

To support remote learning, a device will be provided for every student and we will work to ensure that all families have access to the internet. We will distribute instructional materials, school supplies and Chromebooks to students on September 2nd and 3rd. We will email you the distribution pick-up schedule by homeroom in the next email.

Online Learning at North Star Elementary

Remote learning will happen Monday through Friday. Unlike the Spring of 2020, the Fall of 2020 will be as interactive as possible. This year we will not be posting class lists on the front doors of the school. Next Wednesday, your child(ren) will receive a letter from their teacher via email introducing themselves and sharing with you a detailed remote learning schedule. Live zoom sessions will be scheduled within these time periods for each grade: Kindergarten 8:45-12:20pm, 1st Grade 8:45am-2pm, 2nd Grade 8:45am-2pm, 3rd Grade 8:45am-2:30pm, 4th Grade 8:45am-2:40pm, 5th Grade 8:45am-2:50pm.  Classes will be taught using a synchronous (live) model. This means that students and teachers will have the ability to interact with each other.

Attendance & Grading

Consistent attendance, participation in learning activities and completion of assignments are critical to your child’s success with remote learning. Attendance and participation will be monitored and your student’s work will be graded. Teachers will provide more details in the coming weeks.

Red Clay Remote Care

We understand that childcare may be a challenge for some families during these unprecedented times. Red Clay is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware, the YMCA of Delaware and the Latin American Community Center to offer on-site care this school year. This will be similar to the before care and after care that we have typically provided during inservice days.

For more information, please contact: Thomas Shinn, TShinn@bgclubs.org

Social/Emotional Support at North Star Elementary School

We have built time into our school’s schedule to support social/emotional learning. Please look out for our upcoming Home Student Wellness Questionnaire, which will assist our team in identifying students who may be in need of additional social/emotional support.

Our school has a support team consisting of a school counselor, school psychologist and tiered support leaders to support your child remotely and in person. If you have a concern related to your child’s social/emotional health, please contact our support team members below:

Special Services & English Learners

We are committed to supporting all learners. During remote learning, all services and supports outlined in students’ IEPs will be provided through remote instruction and telepractice. The special education teacher/case manager and related service providers will communicate the schedule for special education and related services with the family. For students with 504 plans, all supports outlined in the plan will be incorporated within remote learning sessions or through telepractice (e.g., therapies, counseling services). English learners will continue to receive English Language Development support integrated with their class schedule.

It is important to stay up to date with routine health exams and immunizations including the flu shot.

It is imperative that we have updated student health information on record for your child.
