Stanton Middle School hosted a College and Career Fair April 10, 2017 from 8:25 - 2:00. This event was coordinated by AVID and Community in Schools. Twenty-four classes from grades 6-8 attended the fair.
There were two guest speakers: Adrienne Wallace who is an epidemiologist and works for Nemours and Hanifah Shabazz, City Council President.
After the keynote speakers, students had the opportunity to visit and speak with representatives from various occupations and local colleges. These included Cecil County Community College, Delaware State University as well as career representatives from AmeriCorps NNC, Shop Rite, Delaware Air National Guard and Delaware Law Enforcement.
Students enjoyed visiting and talking with the various representatives. One student, who was apprehensive about attending, left the fair excited about the prospect of attending Cecil College and possibly working at Shop Rite this summer. Another student learned about various jobs that involve working outside, while a third enjoyed interacting with a tablet to determine careers that matched his interest. Other students, who were interested in joining the military, asked the National Guard representative questions about what steps were needed to join the military. All students benefitted from this experience!
