French Singer/Songwriter Performs at McKean

As part of Thomas McKean High School’s National French Week celebration, French singer/songwriter Eric Vincent treated students to a dynamic, fun-filled concert on October 24, 2018. Students from McKean, Dickinson, A.I. High and H. B. Middle School gathered in the auditorium to listen to the interactive, live musical performance.

The multilingual concert, broadcast on Facebook Live was recorded by students in McKean’s audio, radio and television pathway. The performance will later be rebroadcast by Red Clay’s EDtv.

Monsieur Vincent captured the students’ attention with his powerful voice and virtuosity as a guitar player. He has performed in more than 140 countries including 48 states in the U.S and is considered one of the best contemporary French singers. As a songwriter Vincent has collaborated with and written songs for James Taylor. His songs with universal themes captivate audiences of all ages by blending folk, jazz, rock and ethnic rhythms.

Principal Brian Mattix told the students that it was exciting to have the opportunity to listen to an artist of this caliber. He said, “It is my hope to bring a variety of artists to McKean on a regular basis.”

Organized by McKean French teacher Connie Regan, the concert was the kick-off event celebrating French history and culture. Students in Regan’s French classes have been preparing by participating in “musique Mercredi”, musical Wednesday.  Every Wednesday they listen to French songs, some by Eric Vincent.  “It’s so important to include performing arts in a well-rounded education, Regan said. “Music is truly a universal language, so whether students spoke a lot of French, a little bit, or none at all, they were able to enjoy M. Vincent’s performance. We are so privileged to have support from administration and faculty to make this event happen.”

Additional activities celebrating National French Week at McKean include sharing of French trivia and vocabulary on morning announcements, playing in apètanque(lawn ball-throwing) tournament, making French pastries, participating in a music radio show and watching a French based movie.
