  • What is Positive Behavior Support?

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a data driven school wide system to teach behavioral expectations. The focus of the program is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youth by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.

This is promoted in our Pledge, said every morning by the students during announcements:

We are Highlands' Scholars and together we will grow,

Working hard to do our best in every way we know.

Respectful, Responsible, and Ready are what we believe,

These 3 R's will help us to achieve!

  • Wildcat Cash Procedures

    What is Wildcat Cash?

Wildcat Cash are tickets presented to a student for demonstrating one or more of the Wildcat Expectations  (Respectful, Responsible, and Ready). The purpose of Wildcat Cash is to promote positive interactions between the staff and students.

How Can Wildcat Cash Be Earned?

Staff members will have Wildcat Cash to present to the students. Students can earn Wildcat Cash throughout the day by demonstrating one of more of the Wildcat Expectations.

What Can Wildcat Cash Be Used For?

Wildcat Cash can be used for a variety of rewards and events. They can be “cashed out” at the PBS school store for school supplies and prizes, as well as used for rewards and privileges in the classroom. They can also be used for the monthly PBS events offered throughout the year (Ice Cream Social, Laser Light Show, 87ers Game, Jammies and Cocoa, the Walkin' Auction).

  • Family Support

The link between families and positive behavioral interventions and supports is imperative.  When families are meaningfully involved in educational activities, their children have more success in school.  Families play an important role in their child’s education and social development.

    Tips for Positive Behavior:

    • Reward efforts with a positive comment.
    • Give clear and specific directions and expectations.
    • Try and stay calm and use a calm voice.
    • Set reasonable limits.
    • Be consistent…YES means YES and NO means NO.
    • Set a good example.  Actions speak louder than words.
    • Proactively anticipate situations.
    • Have patience.
    • Have fun and enjoy the ride!

One of the best ways to address a problem behavior is to begin with the positives.  After all, you love your child, but you may not like the behavior.  It is the behavior you want to change.  Thinking about answers to these questions may help you develop a positive plan that will lead to a more appropriate behavior.

    • What does my child do well?
    • What will my child find rewarding and/or motivating?
    • What is my child’s favorite ______? (color, food, TV show, music, sport, activity)
